(formerly PDL) is the proven developmental leader in pre-professional soccer in the U.S. and Canada. League Two franchises provide the elite amateur player the opportunity to train and compete at the highest level while maintaining their collegiate eligibility. The league has proven to be an important stepping-stone for top professionals now playing throughout the world, with 70% of all MLS draftees having League Two experience. Unofficially, it is considered to be the fourth tier of competition, behind Major League Soccer, the North American Soccer League, and the United Soccer League. The League Two season consists of 14 regular season matches for each team, seven home and seven away. 72 teams compete in four conferences, split into ten regional divisions. In addition to league play, League Two teams compete in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup as well as various exhibitions.

the USL League Two is the foundation of player development to the professional ranks including the USL and Major League Soccer. Each league utilizes League Two for player development differently on a club-by-club basis. For instance, a Major League Soccer club will operate or affiliate with a League Two organization in order to provide their players the opportunity to obtain the precious training time needed in order to qualify for homegrown status. Similarly, higher tier USL clubs will utilize League Two for player identification.
